A Japanese air force officer and a US Air Force instructor pilot were the two people killed in a military plane crash in Alabama Friday evening, Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force said Saturday.
The Japanese second lieutenant and the US instructor crashed around 5 p.m. local time as their T-38 was landing at the Montgomery Regional Airport. It went down in a wooded area adjacent to the airport.
Their names were not yet released.
The lieutenant was learning maneuvering and other skills in the US Air Force curriculum to become a fighter pilot, Reuters reported.
The plane was assigned to the 14th Flying Training Wing from the 50th Flying Training Squadron, based in Columbus, Missouri, and was headed to Tallahassee, Florida, according to the Alabama News Network. The accident is under investigation.
