A Massachusetts couple who went hiking at Acadia National Park in Maine died after they apparently plunged about 100 feet from icy cliffs on Dorr Mountain, authorities said.
Wayne Beckford, 28, and Kassandra Caceres, 30, of Rutand, Mass., arrived in Bar Harbor, Maine, on March 16, the National Park Service said in a news release.
They were last heard from around noon Thursday, when Caceres told family members, over the phone, that she was interested in hiking the nearby Cadillac Mountain.
Concerns arose Friday afternoon when the couple did not check out of their hotel or return to their car.
Searchers found their bodies Saturday.
While officials say they believe the pair fell from ice-covered cliffs, they did not release any further details.
A GoFundMe page launched for Beckford describes him as “a fun-loving brother, son cousin, uncle and an amazing dad to his 3 beautiful girls.”
Acadia National Park is described as the “crown jewel of the North Atlantic coast,” according to the NPS.
With 3.5 million visits a year, it is one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the US.
