A gunman opened fire at a train yard close to San Jose’s airport Wednesday morning — leaving “multiple people” dead or injured, including the shooter, officials in California said.
The suspect attacked the VTA Light Rail Facility on West Younger Avenue around 6:30 a.m. local time, but it’s not clear how many people were injured or killed — officials would only say “multiple people” were impacted, including employees of the agency.
“There’s a lot of speculation on fatalities,” Deputy Russell Davis, public information officer for the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office, told reporters during a news briefing.
“I don’t have a number for you. Everything is preliminary. It just happened.”
Davis confirmed the shooter is “deceased” and there was no longer an active public safety threat, but he didn’t provide further details on how the gunman was killed or if they worked at the facility, which is about 50 miles south of San Francisco.
The mother of a VTA employee told KTVU her son called to tell her that the shooting occurred during a union meeting and he’d been safely relocated to an auditorium at the nearby sheriff’s office. Davis was unable to confirm that detail.

He said the train yard is not a station for commuters but a maintenance yard and a “control center” for VTA and a hub that stores multiple trains. The spokesperson said further details about the shooting would be released in the next hour and if anyone has information about what happened, to get in touch with the sheriff’s office.
