A man who shot and wounded a 3-year-old girl while she was walking with her father outside a New York City day care had opened fire at another man who was putting his 2-year-old son in the back of a car, police said Saturday.
The girl, who is hospitalized and expected to survive, was an unintended target of the shooting outside Creative Minds Day Care in Brooklyn at about 6 p.m. Friday, police said. She was leaving the day care in the Brownsville neighborhood with her father when the gunman fired several shots at the other man and fled in a car driven by someone else, officials said.

Kenneth Corey, the NYPD’s chief of department, urged the public to help police identify the shooter and noted the girl was the third child struck by a stray bullet in the city this year.
“Enough is enough,” Corey said at a news conference Friday evening. “We need to fix this. We need to save these children and we need to save our city and we need to do it together.”
A rally against gun violence was scheduled outside the day care Saturday afternoon.
