Zach Plesac continues to find unique ways to earn a trip to the injured list.

The Guardians placed the right-hander on the IL with a broken pitching hand on Friday. Manager Terry Francona told reporters Plesac’s right palm was swollen and the team believes the injury occurred when he punched the mound after allowing a home run to the Mariners Jake Lamb in his last start on Saturday.

The “best case” for Plesac – who is 3-11 with a 4.39 ERA in 23 starts – is he will be placed in a splint and miss a week, Francona said. The team will have him examined soon by specialist Dr. Thomas Graham.

It is the second straight year Pleasac, 27, has suffered an odd injury. Last May he broke his right thumb while ripping off his shirt after a tough outing and catching it on chair in the locker room.

His latest injury will leave Cleveland without one of its top starters as the Guardians try to hold off the Twins and White Sox, just one and three games back in the AL Central, respectfully, entering Saturday. Compounding the problem, is the team also put fellow starter Aaron Civale (forearm inflammation) on the IL.
