An 8-year-old Virginia boy who died after falling from the roof of a moving vehicle was “car surfing” while his older sister was driving, police said.
New footage reviewed by Hampton police revealed that the minor, who was not named, had climbed out of the window of a 2006 Ford Explorer while under the supervision of Enashia Futrell, 18, on Oct. 2.
As the older sister drove around an apartment complex on Golden Gate Drive, the boy stood on the roof of the car, pretending to surf the streets for 1,000 feet until he was launched from the vehicle, 13 News Now reports.
He was found unresponsive in the roadway and died two days after being airlifted to a nearby hospital.
During an interview with police, Futrell claimed she was not aware that her brother had climbed out of the car, but the footage also shows that prior to the fall, the boy and another child in the car were hanging out of the windows without any restraints.
Futrell, of Newport News, admitted that she was driving above the 10 mph limit within the apartment complex, and that she was distracted.
Futrell’s mother told police that the teen would often help take care of the kids after school whenever she’s not available. Another child was reportedly in the front passenger’s seat when the incident occurred.

The 18-year-old has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child endangerment.
