On May 12, 2025, the federal sex trafficking trial of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs commenced in Manhattan, featuring compelling testimonies from the prosecution’s first witnesses. Combs faces multiple charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution, stemming from allegations of a prolonged pattern of abuse and coercion.
The trial opened with testimony from Israel Florez, a former security guard at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. Florez recounted a 2016 incident where he responded to a distress call and discovered Combs with a “devilish” stare and his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, exhibiting visible injuries. Florez testified that Combs attempted to bribe him with cash, saying, “Don’t tell nobody,” after the assault. This account aligns with surveillance footage showing Combs assaulting Ventura, which prosecutors presented as evidence of his abusive behavior.
The second witness, Daniel Phillip, a male escort, testified about his interactions with Ventura and Combs. Phillip stated that Ventura paid him for sexual encounters, often in Combs’ presence, and that Combs would occasionally give directions during these encounters. During cross-examination, Phillip acknowledged being offered $4,000 before any sexual activity occurred.
Prosecutors allege that Combs orchestrated drug-fueled sex parties, referred to as “freak-offs,” where individuals were coerced into sexual acts. They claim that Combs used his influence to manipulate and control victims, including threatening to release compromising footage to maintain dominance.
Combs’ defense team acknowledges his history of violence but contends that his actions were part of a consensual “swinger lifestyle.” They argue that the relationships and encounters were consensual and that the prosecution’s portrayal of events is misleading.
The trial is expected to last eight to ten weeks, with Cassie Ventura anticipated to testify. Combs remains in federal custody without bail and could face life imprisonment if convicted on all counts.
