Your brain can drop into light sleep within seconds. You might think you were just “resting your eyes,” but you actually dozed off.

This is the first stage of sleep, and it’s super light.
During this stage:

• You can still hear things around you

• You may think you’re awake

•You can drift in and out without noticing

It can last only 1–5 minutes, and people often don’t remember it.

Watching TV, sitting still, riding in a car, or laying down can make your brain switch off quickly without you realizing it.

These are tiny sleep episodes lasting a few seconds.

You won’t remember them, and they can happen when you’re tired — even while sitting upright.

You “come back” and don’t remember a few minutes

• Your phone drops

• Your head jerks

• You suddenly realize a TV show jumped ahead

• Someone talks to you and you didn’t respond
