A family Halloween photo became a debate over who should get to be the princess.
Paris Hilton responded to criticism of her family’s “Beauty and the Beast” costumes after some social media users questioned why she dressed as Belle while her daughter, London, appeared as Chip.
In coverage published October 29, Hilton explained that London had chosen the teacup character herself. Husband Carter Reum dressed as the Beast, while son Phoenix appeared as Lumière. (people.com)
A Costume Photo Becomes a Parenting Debate
The criticism rested on an assumption: that London would have preferred the princess costume.
Paris’s explanation offered a much simpler possibility. A child can have a favorite character that adults wouldn’t expect—and that favorite doesn’t have to wear a crown.
It’s also a reminder of how quickly a photograph can become a story about someone’s intentions. Viewers see the finished picture, but rarely the conversations, requests and decisions that happened beforehand.
Does Every Family Moment Need a Verdict?
Celebrity parents choose what to share publicly, and followers will naturally have opinions. Still, there is room to enjoy a playful family photo without turning every costume choice into a judgment about parenting.
Sometimes the child dressed as a teacup simply wanted to be a teacup.
Was the criticism fair, or did the internet read too much into a Halloween picture?
